Spotlight: Recognizing Black History Month at DC Public Schools
SpotlightsDC Public Schools is recognizing Black History this month and every month!
DCPS history is Black history. Throughout the school year, students learn about the culture and many contributions from those within the Black community, including African Americans and all the diverse people within the African Diaspora.
Together with your family you can practice these three things to learn Black history together all year:
- Learn about a member of the Black community each day. Make it personal, local, and immediate by creating your own adventure of learning about Black History based on location with this interactive map. Remember to highlight diverse identities including the Black LGBTQIA+ community!
- Encourage your child to express their thoughts and feelings about what they are learning using resources from Disney, PBS, Sesame Street and more.
- See below for a few of the many creative ways DCPS educators are highlighting Black History in their lessons this month and year long.
DCPS was proud to support DC Black Lives Matter at Schools Week of Action for a second year in a row. It took place from January 31 to February 4, 2022.
The week is an annual movement of educators organizing for racial justice in education to collectively affirm the lives and uplift the voices of Black students.
DCPS educators have had the opportunity to engage with the Black Lives Matter at Schools lesson plans, resources, and professional development opportunities.
