Thank You for a Strong First Week!

This post is an email sent by Chancellor Ferebee to the DCPS community on September 3, 2021.

Dear DCPS Families,

As educators, our greatest joy comes from seeing students learning enthusiastically. This week, our hearts were full as tens of thousands of DC Public Schools students reunited with their classmates and teachers in schools across the city. This was possible thanks to the commitment of our community and the hard work of our students, families, and staff. Thank you.

As the school year continues, our focus will be making sure our students feel loved, challenged, and prepared. Throughout our first week of classes, I visited schools across all eight wards in the District. I saw our students building connections with each other and their teachers. I saw our excellent educators putting our engaging curriculum in action as students dove into math, science, social students, the arts and more. I saw our DCPS values in action at every school.

I am proud of everything our students and staff accomplished this week as many learn new routines and return to the building for the first time in nearly a year and a half. We regularly review and assess our approach based on the guidance of health officials and safety experts. We will continue to share information about how we are putting our health and safety protocols into action.

Let’s do everything possible to make sure that this week is the first of many that our students have in school together. As we all prepare for the Labor Day weekend, I encourage you to make smart decisions that help keep our students safe and keep our schools open. Get vaccinated. Limit nonessential travel. Stay home when you feel unwell.

As a school district, we are committed to meeting our students where they are academically and social-emotionally. We’re excited about the joyful and rigorous classroom experience that your child will experience this year. See you back at school on Tuesday, September 7.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS FOR FAMILIES 

Take the Shot, DC!  
The science is clear: the best way to stop the spread of COVID-19 is to get vaccinated. DCPS highly encourages all eligible students and community members to get vaccinated. Go to vaccinate.dc.gov to find information on the vaccination clinics happening across the city. DC students can get AirPods or a $51 gift card if they get their first shot at the Johnson, Sousa, or Brookland Middle School locations between now and September 30. Locations will be open this Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Asymptomatic Testing  
Consistent with CDC and DC Health guidance, DCPS will test 10-20 percent of students each week to screen for COVID-19 as part of our health and safety protocols, targeting unvaccinated students.  

Students are automatically enrolled in the testing program and testing began at nearly 40 schools this week. To opt out your student, go to osse.dc.gov/page/school-based-covid-19-testing. To understand the non-invasive saliva test, watch this explainer video!

Routine Immunizations  
Students must be in compliance with routine childhood immunization requirements by their 20th school day to attend in-person learning. To see a list of required immunizations, visit dchealth.dc.gov/immunizations, and you can schedule an appointment at vaccinate.dc.gov.

Estimadas familias de las DCPS,

Como educadores, nuestra más grande alegría es ver a los estudiantes aprender con entusiasmo. Esta semana, nuestros corazones se llenaron cuando decenas de miles de estudiantes se reunieron con sus compañeros y con sus maestros en las escuelas en toda la ciudad. Esto fue posible gracias al compromiso de nuestra comunidad y el gran trabajo de nuestros estudiantes, de las familias y del personal. Gracias.

A medida que continúa el año escolar, nuestro enfoque será en asegurarnos de que nuestros estudiantes se sientan queridos, desafiados y preparados. Durante nuestra primera semana de clases, visité escuelas en los ocho sectores del Distrito. Vi a nuestros estudiantes establecer conexiones con sus maestros. Vi a nuestros excelentes educadores poner en acción nuestro interesante plan de estudios mientras los estudiantes ponían toda su dedicación durante sus clases de Matemáticas, Ciencias, Estudios Sociales, Artes y más. Vi nuestros valores de las DCPS en acción en todas las escuelas.

Me siento muy orgulloso de todo lo que nuestros estudiantes y personal lograron esta semana, ya que muchos están aprendiendo nuevas rutinas y están de regreso al edificio escolar por primera vez en casi un año y medio. Regularmente revisamos y evaluamos nuestra estrategia o enfoque basándonos en la guía de los funcionarios de salud y expertos en seguridad. Continuaremos compartiendo información sobre cómo estamos poniendo en práctica nuestros protocolos de salud y de seguridad.

Hagamos todo lo posible para asegurarnos de que esta semana sea la primera de muchas que nuestros estudiantes estén juntos en la escuela. Mientras todos nos preparamos para el fin de semana del Día del Trabajo, los animo a que tomen decisiones inteligentes que ayuden a mantener a nuestros estudiantes seguros y a nuestras escuelas abiertas. Vacúnese. Limite los viajes no esenciales y quédese en casa cuando se sienta mal.

Como distrito escolar, tenemos el compromiso de estar dónde nuestros estudiantes se encuentran académica y socioemocionalmente. Estamos entusiasmados con la experiencia alegre y rigurosa en el salón que su hijo tendrá este año. Nos vemos de regreso en la escuela el martes 7 de septiembre

RECORDATORIOS IMPORTANTES PARA LAS FAMILIAS 

¡Residentes del Distrito, vacúnense!
La ciencia es clara: la mejor manera de detener la propagación del COVID-19 es vacunándose. Las DCPS alientan extremadamente a que todos los estudiantes elegibles y miembros de la comunidad se vacunen. Visite vaccinate.dc.gov para encontrar información sobre los centros de vacunación en toda la ciudad. Los estudiantes del Distrito de Columbia pueden obtener unos AirPods o una tarjeta de regalo de $51 si se ponen su primera vacuna en las ubicaciones de Johnson, Sousa o Brookland Middle School entre ahora y el 30 de septiembre

Pruebas asintomáticas
