Dear DC Public Schools (DCPS) Community,
Last week, I joined Mayor Bowser and DC education leaders at Garrison Elementary School to celebrate an exciting milestone—DC is ranked #1 in the nation for math and literacy growth since the pandemic by Harvard, Stanford, and Dartmouth’s Education Scorecard.
This recognition is powerful, but it’s not surprising. Across DCPS, the practices that drive progress are apparent every day: students deeply engaged in evidence-based learning, educators who show up for our young people, and families partnering every step of the way.
While this moment further solidifies our status as the fastest improving urban district in the country, it also comes at a meaningful point in time, as I recently announced my upcoming transition from DCPS. This moment reflects more than a ranking. It tells the story of a strong community united in its commitment to progress. It’s the result of shared belief in our students and a relentless focus on helping every child reach their full potential.
Keep reading for examples of how this work comes to life. Students are building confidence through ice skating, innovative learning environments are raising the bar, and young poets are raising their voices. Each highlight reflects what’s possible when we invest in our students and their potential.
Thank you for your continued partnership and unwavering commitment to DCPS students.
In partnership,
Lewis D. Ferebee, Ed.D.
Chancellor, DC Public Schools

DCPS Highlights
DC Leads the Nation in Academic Growth 📈
DCPS’ literacy progress can be partly attributed to the DCPS Reading Clinic, where teachers are trained to better support students. For math, the district has replicated this approach by expanding teacher development, launching the DCPS Math Center, and delivering high-impact tutoring to thousands of students. These strategies are accelerating learning and driving gains across classrooms districtwide.

Thank You, DCPS Partners 🤝
DCPS celebrated Partner Appreciation Week by recognizing many partners who show up for our students every day. Whether supporting students in the classroom, enriching after-school experiences, or showing up across athletic fields, DCPS partners play a vital role in helping DCPS students learn and grow.
Gliding into Confidence ⛸️
As part of the 5th-grade ice skating cornerstone, students showed off their skills on the ice for Chancellor Ferebee at the Fort Dupont Ice Arena. In partnership with the DC Department of Parks and Recreation and Monumental Sports and Entertainment’s District of Play initiative, DCPS students learned from certified coaches and developed new skills with every stride.

School Stories
Redefining Sustainable Schools🌱
John Lewis Elementary School is setting a benchmark as the first school to achieve Net Zero Energy, WELL Platinum, and LEED Platinum certifications. Designed with student health and performance at its core, this transformation shows how sustainable design can elevate learning across the district.
Math Night with Commanders Hype 🧮
Nearly 300 students and families came together at Alice Deal Middle School for DCPS’ third Family Math Night, where hands-on activities made math fun and engaging. With a special appearance by Major Tuddy of the Washington Commanders, the evening brought added energy, showing that math and community spirit go hand in hand.

Student Voices Take the Page 📖
10th and 11th graders from H.D. Woodson High School share their stories in Living in the Storm, a newly released poetry anthology created in partnership with a local youth writing nonprofit. The collection explores students’ experiences, passions, and perspectives, marking a unique milestone as young authors have their voices published and heard.
